Calling All Greeks!

On Wednesday, September 27, Tri Delta joined the Greek community in a phone march to urge Senators and Representatives to sign on as supporters of the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act.

On Wednesday, September 27, five new sponsors signed the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act including Congressman Ric Keller (R-FL), Chairman of the House subcommittee that oversees most higher education issues. Deena Adelson, Texas/Arlington, called Congressman Keller as part of the Capital Fraternal Caucus’s Greek Phone March on Wednesday September 27 and urged him to sponsor the legislation that will allow donors to make tax-deductible gifts to Greek housing. Her phone call was critical in securing his sponsorship. To date there are 150 sponsors of the bill in the House and 27 sponsors in the Senate.

According to Past Fraternity President Sarah Lindsay, Miami/Ohio, Tri Delta’s participation in the phone march put our Fraternity among the top participating groups in the phone march. Other groups with strong participation included Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Phi, Chi Omega, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Kappa Theta, Pi Beta Phi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, and Zeta Tau Alpha.

Congress is now on recess until after Election Day and will return to Washington on Monday, November 13. “When Congress returns for its lame duck session there will be a flurry of legislative activity that may include chances for us to attach the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act to larger bills,” Kevin O’Neill, the creator of Capital Fraternal Caucus, explained.

The leaders of the Capital Fraternal Caucus are urging all Greeks to get registered on fraternalcaucus.com and to sign up to receive the newsletter. “A last-minute phone march in November or December could make a difference in whether or bill becomes law this year. The best way to find out about these activities is to log on to our Web site,” Kevin said.

More than 200 people joined the fraternalcaucus Web site membership list on Wednesday and the Web site enjoyed its highest day of traffic in its short history.
